Net metering, step by step

Net metering lets you push surplus daytime generation into the grid and draw it back at night, so you pay only for your net consumption. It is what makes an on-grid system worth building.

1

Install a system of 1kW or more

Net metering is available for systems from 1kW up to 1MW. The inverter must be on your DISCO’s approved list. Ask your installer to confirm the exact model before ordering.

2

Installer files the application with your DISCO

LESCO, K-Electric, IESCO, MEPCO and the rest each run their own intake. The application needs your CNIC, the last paid bill, the system design, and the inverter’s test certificates.

3

DISCO inspects the installation

An inspection team checks earthing, protection devices, and that the installed capacity matches the application. Fixing what they flag is the most common cause of delay.

4

NEPRA issues the generation licence

For domestic systems this is a formality once the DISCO signs off, but it is a separate step with its own queue.

5

Bi-directional meter installed and agreement signed

The DISCO swaps your meter and you sign a three-year agreement. From that day, units you export are credited against units you import.

Typical timeline

4–10 weeks

from application to meter swap

Typical cost

Rs 40–70k

meter, fees and processing

Agreement term

3 years

renewable

What to ask an installer

  • • Is the net-metering application included in your quote, or billed separately?
  • • Which inverter model are you using, and is it on my DISCO's approved list?
  • • Who handles the inspection visit and any rework the DISCO asks for?
  • • What happens to my payment schedule if approval takes longer than expected?

Sanctioned load matters: your approved export capacity is capped relative to the load sanctioned on your connection. If you want a 10kW system on a 5kW sanctioned load, you will need to apply for a load enhancement first, and that adds weeks.
